"La palabra favorita de José es Dios"
 José nació en Urrao un pueblo del departamento de Antioquia situado en el noroeste de Colombia.
Cuando era niño José vivía con su familia en una granja muy bonita, pero en 1948 su familia perdió la granja.
Este fue un tiempo muy violento en esta zona, cuya capital es Medellín y hubo muchas revueltas y problemas.
Fue después de perder la granja que José y su familia decidieron mudarse a Medellín.
En Medellin no había buenas oportunidades para obeter una educación y José decidió unirse al ejercito a los 18 años.
A José le gustó el ejercito y le dieron una promoción a los 18 meses de entrar en las fuerzas armadas.
José sirvió como sargento por cinco años en el Batallón 3 de Infantería. Durante este tiempo fue destinado a Egipto a luchar en la Guerra del Cana de Suez, donde luchó por un año.
Después del ejercito José se casó y trabajó para el Banco de la República de Colombia por 28 años.
En el año 2000 José llegó a los Estados Unidos con su hija. Aquí en Norwalk el trabajó en una fabrica por un poco tiempo.
José tiene dos hijas, Adriana y Liliana y cuatro nietos: tres niños y una niña.
José ha viajado a varios países, como Francia, España, Portugal, Italia, Suiza, Israel y Egipto.
Su comida favorita es el plato típico de Antioquia "la bandeja paisa"
Le gustan los Estados Unidos porque aquí puede encontrar la paz.

José was born in Urrao a town in the Department of Antioquia in the Northwest of Colombia.
José spent his childhood in a beautiful farm in Urrao with his family, but in 1948 his family lost the farm. This was a time of extreme violent demonstrations and problems in this area of Colombia, which capital is Medellin.
After loosing their farm, José and his family decided to move o the capital of the Department, Medellin.
In Medellin there were no many opportunities to continued his education , so José joined the army at the age of 18.
José really liked the army and was promoted to sergeant 18 months after joining.  He served as a sergeant for five years in the 3rd. Infantry battalion. During this time he was station in Egypt and fought the War at the Suez Canal for a year.
After leaving the army, he married and worked for the Bank of the Colombian Republic for 28 years.
In the year 2000 José came to the United States with his daughter. Here , he worked in a factory in Norwalk for a short time.
José has two daughters Adriana y Liliana and four grandchildren: three boys and one girl.
José has traveled to several countries: Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Israel and Egypt.
His favorite food is the typical dish of Antioquia "la bandeja paisa"
He likes the United States because he can find peace here.

“Nubia, me recibe cada día con sonrisas y su ojos brillan cuando habla de baile”

Nubia es una abuela Colombiana de sesenta y siete años.  Me recibe cada lunes con sonrisas que hacen mi día súper especial.

Me dijo que una de sus hijas se casó en año 2000 con un ciudadano americano de origen colombiano.  Ella es enfermera, pero decidió continuar sus estudios para  hacerse una enfermera registrada. Por eso le pidió a su mamá que viniera a los Estados Unidos para ayudarla a cuidar  a sus dos hijos de cinco y seis años respectivamente.  Me parece que Nubia está orgullosa de que su hija quiera avanzar sus estudios y está contenta de poder ofrecerle su apoyo.

Nubia también tiene dos hijos y otras tres hijas en Colombia.  Cuando los menciona, me parece que está un poco triste.  Me explicó que ellos no pueden venir a los Estados Unidos porque no les es posible obtener el visado.  Pienso que está frustrada porque no puede enviarles más dinero.  “Hay mucha violencia y no hay mucho trabajo,” suspira.  “Colombia es un país con muchos recursos naturales, pero somos pobres, porque nuestro gobierno es corrupto.”

Nubia está contenta de vivir con la familia de su hija, pero recientemente, me confió que si hablara mejor inglés le gustaría trabajar cuidando de otros niños, mientras sus nietos están en la escuela y así poder ganar más dinero.  Ahora, a veces,  trabaja como costurera y trata de enviar lo que puede a sus hijos en Colombia.

Cuando Nubia vivía en su país, enseñaba baile folklórico colombiano.  Sus ojos brillan cuando habla de baile.  Le gusta mucho bailar salsa, merengue, y otros tipos de baile.  En cuanto que le dije, que a mí también me encanta el baile, Nubia me invitó a ir al Senior Center la noche en que ella  va a enseñar  baile folklórico colombiano.

“Nubia greets me with a big smile and her eyes sparkle when she talks about dance”

Nubia is a fifty seven year old grandmother from Colombia.  She is from Cali, Colombia.  She greets me with a smile every Monday which makes my day very special.

She had a happy childhood when she was little.  Her mother, a professor, and her father, a carpenter, were affectionate and loving to their seven children.  She remembers visiting a big cathedral in Buga with her family. It was a beautiful church, and she loved praying there. She still prays every day to thank God for giving her good health and good life.

She said that one of her daughters married an American citizen from Colombia in year 2000.  She is a nurse, but she decided to study further to become a registered nurse.  In order to study, she asked her mother a favor to come to the States to take care of her two children.  Nubia seems proud that her daughter wants to continue her studies, and is happy to help her.

Nubia also has two sons and three other daughters in Colombia.  When she mentions them, she seems sad.  She explained that that they cannot come to the States, because it isn’t possible for them to obtain visas.  I think she is frustrated that she cannot send them more money.  “There is a lot of violence and not enough work,” she sighed.  “If the government of Colombia was better, Colombia would be a paradise.  “We have all kinds of food, we have oil, emeralds, and two seas, the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean, but our government if corrupt.”

Nubia is content to live with her daughter’s family, but recently she confided that if she spoke English better she would work taking care of children while her grandchildren are in school.  Sometimes she works as a tailor and tries to send her children in Columbia as much money as possible.

When Nubia lived in her country, she taught Colombian Folk dancing.  Her eyes shine when she talks about dancing.  She loves to dance the Salsa, Meringue, and other types.  As soon as I told her that I also love to dance, she invited me to a dance event at the Senior Center where she will be teaching everybody Colombian Folk Dance.  I am excited  about learning it, of course

Louisa Baur Heumann, que empezó a dar clases de inglés a los ancianos del centro al comienzo del proyecto y todavía sigue yendo todas las semanas a dar las clases. Ella ha sido realmente una bendición para el centro y tiene una relación muy especial con sus alumnos. Pienso que se han creado relaciones muy entrañables gracias a este proyecto. A ella le debemos la gestión de los preciosos retratos, no solo los que adornan el centro, sino también los que fueron presentados a los ancianos en la fiesta de Navidad. 

Louisa Baur Heumann, who started imparting ESL classes to the seniors at the Center at the beginning of the project and continued offering her classes every week for years. She has been a real blessing for the center and she has a very special relationship with her senior students.
I believe that very endearing relationships have been created though this project.
She was the person responsible for arranging to have  the first set of portraits of the seniors done and she also made copies of the portraits and frame them and gave them to the seniors as a Christmas present.

Giovana G. Ramirez, Por toda su ayuda y paciencia conmigo y con los estudiantes. Sin ella este proyecto no hubiera sido posible. Ella ha sido una guía constante y una inspiración para todos. Su trabajo en el Centro y su dedicación a los mayores que asisten al centro es absoluta. Giovana es un regalo para nuestros mayores y su eficacia y dedicación total a su trabajo son ejemplares.

Lucía nació en Bogotá Colombia.

A la temprana de edad de 13 años Lucia fue a vivir con la familia de su esposo. Según ella me cuenta en esos tiempos era costumbre que las niñas se fueran a vivir con la familia del que iba a ser su esposo. Cuando ella tenía 18 años se independizaron de la familia y formaron su propio hogar.

Jorge, el esposo de Lucia, se dedicaba a la restauración de imágenes en las iglesias y era un hombre con mucho talento. Lucia le ayudaba en su trabajo y aprendió a mezclar los colores y a trabajar en la restauración de las esculturas.

Este trabajo les permitía tener una vida bastante holgada. Lucia y Jorge tuvieron 3 hijos y 3 hijas a los cuales Lucia cuidaba abnegadamente y a la vez ayudaba a su esposo.

Su esposo falleció en 1993. Fue entonces cuando Lucia decidió venir a los Estados Unidos para visitar a alguno de sus hijos que vivían aquí en Norwalk. A ella le gustó el pueblo y decidió quedarse a residir aquí, aunque a veces vuelve a su natal Colombia para visitar a los demás hijos que viven allá.

El Centro donde asiste todos los días le ha dado esa energía y motivación para seguir disfrutando de las cosas buenas que la vida le puede dar. Lucia es voluntaria en el Centro de Personas Mayores del Sur de Norwalk (Norwalk Senior Center South) y siempre está dispuesta a ayudar. Es una mujer optimista a la que le gusta bailar mucho y que trata de disfrutar al máximo de lo que el Centro y su familia aquí en Norwalk le pueden brindar.

Aunque su vida no ha sido siempre fácil de sobrellevar, ella sólo recuerda los gratos momentos y vive pensando en un mundo mágico donde todo es tranquilidad y armonía.

Lucia de Cortes was born in Bogotá, Colombia.

When Lucia was 13, she went to live  with the family of the man  who would someday became her husband. She says that at that time in Colombia it was  the costume for girls to live with the families of their future husbands. When she was 18, she married and formed a new household with her husband.

Jorge, Lucia’s husband had very interesting profession. He restored  religious sculptures in Catholic churches. He was a very talented man. Lucia helped him with his work and learned to mix the colors that were needed to restore sculptures.

This work gained them a very comfortable life.They had three sons and three daughters. Lucia took care of the children and helped her husband in his restoration work. Her husband passed away in 1993 and after his death she decided to come to the U.S to visit some of her grown children living in Norwalk. She really loved the town and decided to stay although she returns to Colombia to visit her  her children who are still living there.

She attends the Center every day and this gives her energy and motivation to continue enjoying the good things that life has to offer. Lucia volunteers at the Norwalk Senior Center South and she is always ready to help. She is a very optimistic woman who loves to dance and tries to enjoy everything that the Center, her family and life has to offer. Although her life has not always been easy, she only remembers the good times and keeps on dreaming in a magical world where everything is  tranquil and harmonious.
