Amparo me dijo “Mi
vida fue muy buena. Mi esposo era súper y
estuvimos casados por 29 años.”

Amparo was born in Medellin, Columbia, and she has lived in Norwalk for two years. She has two daughters and two grandchildren in the United States. Amparo has four other daughters in Columbia.
Beatriz, her second daughter, has a daughter named Angelica who is 12 years old and plays the violin in
the Norwalk Symphony. Claudia, her fifth
daughter, has a son, Brian who was born here and has problems with his eyes. Claudia came to the United States
because she had the “American dream” and there is more help here for her and her family.
Amparo came here because her daughter, Claudia, offered to have her live with her, Beatriz and her grandchildren. All of them live together in one house. The problem is that there is no work here. She would like to work in a factory.
She likes the Senior Center because she enjoys the ESL class and the exercise class that she takes three times a week. Also, she likes the very friendly people.
Amparo remembered her life when she was very young. She lived in the country with her mother and father. She had 16 siblings. (Amparo was number 13!) She only went to school from 8 years old until she was 11.
When she was 15 years old, she married Jairo Valderrama. He was a nephew of of her father. They did not meet until 3 months before they were married since he lived in another part of Columbia.
