Ana Gerena

Ana Gerena nació en Puerto Rico.

Ana vivía en Puerto Rico con su familia y cuando tenía 17 años su padre decidió que la familia debía mudarse y venir a vivir a los Estados Unidos. Para Ana esta idea no era muy alentadora ya que tenía a su novio en Puerto Rico y no quería separarse de él. Sin embargo su padre le dio dos alternativas o te casas y te quedas con él en Puerto Rico o vienes con tu familia a Nueva York.

Después de hablar con su novio, tomaron la decisión de casarse. El novio de Ana se enlistó en el ejército y fue destinado a Vietnam y Ana vino a Nueva York con su familia.

Se esposo estuvo en Vietnam 2 años y cuando regresó Ana y su esposo vivieron en el Bronx -“En este tiempo en Nueva York había más abundancia y era muy fácil conseguir un trabajo.  Mi esposo encontró un buen trabajo en una compañía de cuero en Nueva York y más tarde trabajó como taxista”.

Ella se quedó en casa y tuvo tres hijos: 2 chicos y una chica. Ahora tiene 4 nietos.
Ana me cuenta muy orgullosa: “Mis hijos se educaron y tienen sus carreras. MI hijo mayor vive en Norwalk, mi hija vive en el norte del estado de Nueva York y mi otro hijo vive en Florida”.
Ella visita Puerto Rico de vez en cuando y está muy orgullosa de ser puertorriqueña.
Ana ha enseñado a sus hijos a hablar español, porque piensa que es muy importante mantener su lengua y su cultura.

-“Lo que más me gusta de este país es que hay mucha ayuda para las personas que tienen necesidades.”

Lleva viniendo al Centro 13 años desde que se vino a vivir a Connecticut. Le gusta mucho el Centro porque hay muchas actividades diferentes, aunque cree que últimamente ha cambiado bastante debido a los recortes del presupuesto.

Ana Gerena
Ana Gerena was born in Puerto Rico. Ana was living in Puerto Rico and when she was 17 years old her parents decided to move the family to the United States. For Ana this was not good news since she had a boyfriend in Puerto Rico and she did not want to be separated from him.

Nevertheless her father gave her an ultimatum either you come with us to the New York City, or if you want to stay in Puerto Rico, you have to get married.

After speaking with her boyfriend, they decided to get married. Her boyfriend joined the army and left for Vietnam and Ana came to New York with her family.

Her husband was in Vietnam for 2 years and after his return, they moved to the Bronx. She tells me: “At that time, there was abundance in New York City and it was easy to find a job” Her husband found a good job in a leather manufacturing company and later worked as a taxi driver.

She stayed at home and had three children: two boys and a girl. Now she has four grandchildren.
Ana tells me very proudly: - “My children all have careers and education. My oldest son lives in Norwalk, my daughter lives in the northern part of New York State and my other son lives in Florida.
She visits Puerto Rico often and is very proud of her heritage as a Puertorrican.

Ana has taught all her children Spanish, because she thinks that it’s very important to maintain their language and cultural heritage.

 _ “What I like the most about this country is that there a lot of help for people in need” She has been coming to the Center for the past 13 years, ever since she moved to Connecticut.
She loves the Center because there are so many different activities, although she thinks that lately there has been many changes due to budget cuts.
